What Does the Real Presence Really Mean?
Jesus Christ is present here on earth today, and most people don't even realize it. How or where is He Present? He is physically present in every Roman Catholic church which burns a candle next to a tabernacle.
This is what is referred to as the "Real Presence." Jesus Christ is fully present, body, soul and divinity, under the appearance of bread and wine. How? When does this happen? At every Mass, during the consecration, when the priest repeats the words Christ spoke at His Last Supper, a miracle occurs. The bread and wine become Jesus Christ Himself. Every person attending Mass witnesses a miracle every time.
This change of substance with no change of appearance is known as Transubstantiation.
Catholics who participate in Eucharistic Adoration are not worshipping a piece of bread. They are praising our Lord and Savior, fully present under the appearance of bread. The prayers and adoration are always directed to Jesus Christ.
What an incredible gift Jesus left us with. He is still here with us in real, tangible way.
I am at a loss when I read statistics about how many Catholics do not believe in the Real Presence. I have to wonder why they call themselves Catholic, as this is such a central part of our faith. I understand about doubt; I understand that it is hard to comprehend. However, God's ways are not our ways. We will never be able to fully comprehend much of anything about God. The best reason for believing is that we have His Word for it.
